I generally stick to my list/meal plan when I’m doing my food shopping to save money and avoid wasting, but every once in a while, something will catch my eye and I’ll make an exception.  Last week, it was the giant box of ripe, juicy, organic plums that I couldn’t say no to…

It’s such an odd thing to need to buy now, BUT plums are great for your health; they are full of phytonutrients, contain a high amount of fiber, keeping your colon healthy and lowering cholesterol, and a high amount of vitamin C, which can aid in iron absorption and maintain a healthy immune system.


Plums aren’t one of the most popular fruits due to their tartness, but that’s what I love about them.  Their tanginess lends itself well towards this tart, low sugar smoothie and pairs well with the acidity from the lemon.  The berries add a hint, though not too much, of sweetness to balance out the smoothie.  If you prefer more sweetness, I would suggest adding honey or replacing the lemon juice with water.


Tangy PlumBerry Smoothie


  • 2 plums, chopped with skin on
  • 1/2 cup frozen berries
  • 1/3 cup plain yogurt
  • Juice from 1/2 lemon


  • Blend all ingredients in a high speed blender (I use the smoothie attachment on my Ninja) and enjoy

IMG_4402I’m disappointed that my plum stash is depleting.  If I can find more (or practice self control with the few I have left), I have a plum-berry cobbler on my radar!
